Lewis "Lew" Greenberg, MD, MHA

Lewis (“Lew”) Greenberg, MD, MHA, passed away peacefully at his home in Montgomery, Texas, on Thursday, January 8th, 2026, surrounded by his devoted wife and children after bravely facing a four-month battle with pancreatic cancer. His boundless energy, sense of humor and warm personality will live on in the memory of friends and family.

Born in Queens, New York City, on March 29th, 1955, Lew was the youngest child of Albert and Natalie Greenberg. Shortly after his birth, the family, including his sister Rosalind and brother Alan, moved to Long Island. He spent his formative years there, enjoying baseball and playing clarinet in the Freeport High School band, where he graduated third in his class in 1973.

Lew attended Duke University for his first two years of college, then transferred to the University of California, San Diego where he earned a BA in Chemistry with honors in 1977. Following college, he attended Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where he met his medical school classmate and future wife, Laurie, at the orientation party. They married during their third year in 1979. After receiving his medical degree in 1981, he continued at Baylor for his internal medicine residency and was honored to serve as Internal Medicine Chief Resident at the VA Medical Center. He completed his training in 1984, the same year Lew and Laurie welcomed their first child, Matthew.

Lew’s medical career spanned nearly four decades and filled his life with meaning and a sense of service. During medical school, Lew and Laurie each received a National Health Service Corps scholarship involving a service obligation with the Indian Health Service. They practiced for two years at the Fort Apache Reservation in Arizona, where Lew and Laurie’s second child, Daniel, was born. Lew’s remaining two years with the Indian Health Service were in Claremore, Oklahoma. In the following decade Lew practiced in several group settings in Tulsa, where Lew and Laurie’s third child, Rebecca, was born. Tulsa was a wonderful home for Lew and his young family, where both he and Laurie grew professionally while raising their children in a community of dear friends and colleagues.

Never one to stand still, Lew enrolled in one of the earliest distance learning programs for healthcare professionals at the University of Colorado, where he earned a Master’s Degree in Health Administration in 1997. He then began an exciting new phase of his career as a physician executive focused on comprehensive medical group management and physician alignment strategies. Until his retirement in 2020, he served in executive leadership roles with organizations such as CHRISTUS Medical Group, Geisinger Medical Group, UT Medicine San Antonio, CHI St. Lukes Medical Group, and WellMed Medical Management. During these years, work took the family to several communities including Houston, TX, State College, PA and San Antonio, TX, each of which led to close friendships and new experiences. While he loved solving problems in the business of medicine, Lew prided himself on continuing to see patients part time and especially enjoyed teaching medical residents.

After retirement, Lew and Laurie built a home on Lake Conroe and settled in the Houston area. Lew also loved spending time at the family vacation home in Breckenridge, CO, especially during the cool summer months.

Lew led a joyous and active life outside of work. He was a dedicated fan of the New York Mets since childhood, traveling to New York annually to watch their games, and a more recent fan of the San Antonio Spurs. Lew loved playing basketball, golf, and pickleball and found community through participation in sports leagues. After purchasing his first boat in 1993, boating became a cherished pastime for Lew and his family.

Lew was a lifelong learner, always reading a history book, practicing piano, or improving his Spanish. Though raised in a secular Jewish household, he embraced his Judaism as an adult and actively participated in congregations everywhere he lived. Lew and Laurie were proud to complete their adult B’nai Mitzvah together at Congregation Beth Shalom of the Woodlands in 2024.

Becoming a grandparent was one of the great joys of his later life and he delighted in making his grandkids June, Caroline, and Adam laugh. For the last several years, Lew was accompanied everywhere by Jili, a noisy but lovable chihuahua-terrier mix and the last of many cherished pets throughout his life.

Lew was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Natalie, along with his beloved brother Alan Greenberg. He is survived by his wife Dr. Laurie Greenberg, his children Matthew Greenberg, Daniel (Siobhan Downes) Greenberg, and Rebecca (David) Juneau, his grandchildren June Greenberg, Caroline Juneau and Adam Juneau, his sister Rosalind (Michael) Shorenstein and many other family and friends.
